Why I Am Not An Early Adopter.

Ok, so Sony and Microsoft showed us all what they got or are going to give to us or are gonna make us buy....right that's how that works.  We got the PS4 (controller) and we got the Xbox One (third generation?) and well ok cool new consoles, lets hope we can afford them, I like to hope it's kind of my thing.  What isn't my thing though is being that crazy SOB fan and going out right when the new shiny thing is in stores on day one and picking it up. I just don't do that, I have a thing with crowds and noise and people and smells and stupid shit, and people, and dumb people who just don't get how this whole new technology really works. So I wait at least a year or maybe a year and a half mainly because I don't have the money for a new console; sometimes you need to choose between food and gas or a new toy and in this case with me I will take putting gas in my car to get me places and food because it is yummy, and it never needs to update it's stupid software.

Really though I will eventually get an Xbox One and hopefully a PS4 mostly because I missed out on the PS3 and it did have a lot of cool games I hope in some way I can finally play on the PS4.  Again I am not going to get them right away it's just not practical and it has more to do with the fact that I have no idea what the consoles will be like, then the more obvious one which is I am cheap and broke.  There are a number of reasons why I am not an early adopter and I will go through them a few of them.  The first is quite obvious, Games! The Game(s) will not be there for me and wont be there for at least a year, that's the point of all of these things no matter what Microsoft said last Tuesday games are a big part of it all.  I know Microsoft said 15 games at launch but that might not sound so good to some. Back when the Xbox 360 came out it launched with 20 titles, now that's a big number it's an important number in D&D it means you crit and that's awesome.  This however was not the case.

Of those 20 titles 11 were sports games; I don't play sports games hell I don't play sports in real life why would I in a video game?  Of the other 9 titles left, 2 never interested me, another 2 were strictly for Japan.  Another I had already played on the original Xbox so I wasn't interested. Another was just a test to show off how pretty a game could looked and how long someone can make a title.  Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game Of the Movie is a pretty long ass title and it wasn't that fun to, impressive to look at when I was 19 walking around Game Stop.  Another game was broken and a disastrous disappointment to players who were fans of its predecessor, it really shouldn't have been shipped.  That leaves 2 titles left and they were ones that did interested me and guess what they were shooters! Quake 4 and Call of Duty 2 which just looked so awesome back then everyone wanted to play it because no one had seen anything like it before, ironically we have, but not like that.  So yeah 2 games to play on a brand new $400 dollar console at $60 dallors a pop, that just doesn't really do it for me.

Second reason I will not be an early adopter or more importantly I will not be waiting in line on the release date at midnight, is that the first wave goes fast, very fast.  If you wait in line for either the Xbox One or PS4 I predict that you would have to be at least the 10th person in line to grantee yourself a new console depending on where you pre-order it.  The Xbox 360 sold out it's first week if not in it's first day and so did the PS3, I don't know why Sony and Microsoft don't ship an adequate number to retail stores for a good number of people to be happy.  I don't by that they can't keep up with demands or it's too complicated to put together for the factory workers, I will call bullshit on that right now.  I also don't think it's some sinister plot made up by the evil corporations to make the fans work up into more of a frenzy cause...that..just..doesn't work! I hate hearing theories like that they make no damn sense.  However in short I don't do crowds or their smells, I don't like stupid people acting crazy over spending $400 dollars, and I don't like not getting something I want that I am willing to pay for. If it sells out in the first week and wont be restocked for weeks or months after I will wait a year and by then I can just walk in and buy it at some Best Buy no crowds nor smells and no harm. Simple.

Now the third reason I wait is I think developers need time to really get to know these consoles; how they work what the tech is capable of, I guarantee a game like Skyrim would never have been thought of back in the first years of this current generation and if it was achieved it would probably be on 4 discs if not more.  Time is a wondrous thing when it comes to new tech we all complain about how old the consoles are getting and the fact that we want new ones with better games but that is when the great games come out the games we never thought possible before.  During the end of the PS2 life cycle we saw God of War and God of War 2 and they blew everyone away with how good they looked and how incredibly the played. But in the year God of War 2 came out the PS3 had been out for a few months.  It's kind of like demanding Christmas presents while eating Thanksgiving dinner while you are still in your Halloween costume. Give it time people. Right now I see a lot of cool games coming out for this current generation not to mention all the games that will or wont be launch titles for the new generation could be available for the current.  I don't think that the new Call of Duty will just be on the next gen consoles Activision is not stupid, they want your money and they will put the new Call of Duty on everything.

Alright now to be honest when the 360 was announced I really wanted to get one but couldn't afford it, I was a broke 19 year old at the time what do you expect.  If I had the money, if I was just rolling in cash I would have gotten a brand new 360 on day one! And I also would have gotten a PS3 as well because I why not.  But alas I was not and still I am not rolling in money, in fact thinking about how much I have in my checking right now makes me cringe.  Really though right now say if I was rolling in money, or to use a more mature term, financially stable, I probably would not go out on launch day and get these consoles.  The main reason for that is I am just confused about what these consoles want to be, are they game consoles at all? I know Sony promised us a mountain of games and they are going after the indie developers to develop on their system and I am grateful for that but lets not forget that Sony also owns it's own movie studio and music and they will want to incorporate that with this new console.  I am not against it I just see it happening because why not.  Microsoft showed us how to watch TV and how to post on Facebook which is fine, clearly I have been doing it wrong my whole life.  But they also promised us 15 games at launch and 7 of those are new suppose to be new IPs which is great but I hope that I like more the just 2 of them.  No matter what these new consoles can do both play games and other media I will sit back relax be patient and wait.
